The Social Studies Department at Oceanside High School offers a rich and varied selection of courses taught by our wonderful and dedicated teachers. From our wide array of electives—including College Psychology, Criminology, and American History Post-WWII—to our Social Science Research program, Integrated and Conference courses, Government-Economics Mentoring (GEM) program, and our numerous Advanced Placement courses, students have the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of social studies. We also offer Personal Finance, a mandated course for seniors, which is designed to bring real world understanding of economics to our students and help them gain a better appreciation for the impact of personal finance on their daily lives. Teachers continue to do a wonderful job making this course a success as they teach students practical skills such as how to make good financial decisions, how to balance a budget, making career choices, buying a car, and understanding credit cards.
A sampling of some department activities includes:
- The World Interest Club (WiC)—a group of students who participate in Model United Nations Conferences around the country for a unique learning experience. WiC members also contribute to the world and help to make it a better place in an effort to keep the “World Interest” part of the name truthful;
- National History Day—first competition was held at OHS last year—winners participated in the regional competition at Hofstra University; students will continue participating
- Model Congress—in addition to ongoing activities, OHS hosted a weekend session last year attended by neighboring districts;
- GEM—held their annual training retreat for Senior mentors at Coleman Country Day Camp.
The Social Studies Resource Center (SSRC) is staffed by our excellent teachers who welcome students throughout the day to provide them with extra help and assistance. The SSRC also has a resource library and computers for student use. We invite you to visit any time to meet our teachers and see the wonderful work they do!
