A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION
As we begin a new school year, some reflection on the past year is important. Last year the administration and your School Board were presented with drastic cuts in state aid in the midst of the worst recession in more than a generation. Despite the State's failure to provide funds for the education of our children, we were able, with the help of the unions, to present you with a budget that had one of the lowest increases on Long Island, without eliminating programs that are crucial to children’s education.
Your Board promises to continue its fiscal responsibilities while insuring we still have the best system possible. Our kids are our future. We will continue to ensure it is a good one.
We close with a poem by Will Allen Dromgoole that we think represents what our job is as School Board members better than a lot of figures. It speaks to each generation’s responsibilities to its successors.
The Bridge Builder
An old man, going a lone highway, Came, at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had o fears for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near, "You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way; You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide- Why build you the bridge at the eventide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head: "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today A youth, whose feet must pass this way. This chasm, that has been naught to me, To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."
